AMPEX 457 Grand Master 1/4” Mastering Tape 7″ reel, NOS Still Wrapped – BEWARE

Ampex 457 Factory Sealed New Grand Master Studio Mastering Audio Tape from early 1990’s. Condition is New Old Stock . Size of tape is 1/4 by 1800’ and size of reel is 7” Warning DO NOT BUY THIS TAPE !!!!! SEE WiKipedai page on Sticky-shed_syndrome SSS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky-shed_syndrome Sticky-shed syndrome is a condition created by the deterioration of the binders in a magnetic tape, which hold the ferric oxide magnetizable coating to its plastic carrier, or which hold the thinner back-coating on the outside of the tape. This deterioration renders the tape unusable. Some kinds of binder are known to break down over time, due to the absorption of moisture (). Many tapes affected by sticky-shed are those that were made by Ampex/Quantegy such as 406/407, 456/457, 499, and consumer/audiophile grade back coated tapes such as Grand Master and 20-20+. I’m posting this information because this tape is NON-RETURNABLE and because I want to warn all buyers to beware these and other reel to reel tapes sold on Ebay. I have opened one of my NOS boxes and the tape exhibits some slight sticking indicating there may be future issues. It was sealed in plastic so that may have slowed the absorption of moisture. Please note that my older Maxell reel tapes do not have ANY SSS issues because they used a polyester binder and not the polyurethane that has the SSS issue. AMPEX 457 Grand Master 1/4” Mastering Tape 7″ reel, 1800’, sealed NOS. Listing is for one reel. Quantity = number of reels. 5 available. BEWARE – NON-RETURNABLE. Ampex 457 can suffer from Sticky Shed Syndrome and the deterioration of the tape is untestable without being opened. I received one reel that was opened, recorded on, and NOT baked to my knowledge and did NOT leave any residue on my machine, but I cannot confirm the quality of the unopened reels.
